Scientific classification
Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Liliopsida
Order: Alismatales
Family: Araceae
Genus: Anthurium

With more than anthurium varieties, this member of the Arum family is certainly diverse. The anthurium is a tropical species, found growing in the wet tropical mountainous terrain of South America, Panama, and Columbia.

The most characteristic feature of the anthurium is a single “spathe” which protrudes from the top of the flower. This spathe contains both male and female parts, making the anthurium somewhat unique in that it is a hermaphrodite.

For the flower industry, the anthurium is grown in hot house environments. With various cultivars now available, the anthurium is ideal for a host of applications and occasions. Once restricted mainly to "exotic" bouquets, it is now a staple of the flower industry - from simplistic vase arrangements, to impressive floral arrangements, sympathy tributes and corporate displays.

Most commonly seen in red, white, green and pink, there are many other colours available. These include, but are not limited to, pink-white variegated, purple, green-white marbled and even brown!

A brilliant and dramatic tropical flower, whatever the occasion.
